Beltone Batteries

The most commonly used batteries for hearing aids are called zinc-air batteries. Small silver discs, zinc-air batteries are not rechargeable, and must be discarded after use.

Types of hearing aid batteries

Rechargeable hearing aid batteries are now available in certain hearing aid models, like the Beltone Amaze. However, zinc-air disposable batteries are still the most common type used in most hearing aids

Small silver discs, zinc-air batteries are not rechargeable and must be discarded after use (typically 5-7 days.) They come in five sizes that fit the various hearing aid styles. Zinc-air batteries are activated by oxygen. That’s why they are factory-sealed with a sticker that must be removed before placing them into the hearing aids.

To activate, remove the sticker and wait a full minute for enough oxygen to be absorbed before placing the battery in your hearing aid. Once the sticker is removed, the battery is activated and cannot be resealed, so leave the sticker in place until you are ready to use the battery.

Battery Sizes

Different styles and sizes of hearing aids require different sized batteries. Larger hearing aids or those designed for profound hearing loss use more battery power.

It’s easy to select the correct size for your specific hearing aids, because zinc-air hearing aid batteries come in color and number coded packages that designate the size of the battery inside.

Battery life & storage

How should you store hearing aid batteries?

Heat exposure and humidity can shorten battery life. To extend the lifespan of your hearing aid batteries:

Store at room temperature in a dry environment.

Do not store in a bathroom or refrigerator.

Do not carry them loose in a pocket or handbag where they may touch metal items, like keys or coins. This can short-circuit the battery.

How long do hearing aid batteries last?

Hearing aid batteries have an average shelf life of three years. Once activated, they can last anywhere from 5-14 days. Battery life is determined by hearing aid size (larger hearing aids require more battery power), battery size (smaller batteries don’t last as long), hours of use per day, amplification strength and amount of wireless streaming.

Average battery life by size:

Size 10 – three to seven days

Size 312 – three to 10 days

Size 13 – six to 14 days

Size 675 – nine to 20 days

What are some tips for optimum performance?

Store batteries at room temperature (65°F-80°F). Hearing aid batteries will retain up to 97% of their power for a full year when stored at room temperature.

Leave the battery compartments open when you’re not wearing your hearing aids. This limits battery-drain and helps alleviate moisture build-up.

Turn off your hearing aids when not in use to help extend battery life.

Consider a hearing aid dehumidifier, which will absorb moisture from your hearing aid and battery, allowing the battery power to be used more efficiently.

Check the expiration dates and buy hearing aid batteries that don’t expire for a year or more from the purchase date.

If your batteries aren’t lasting as long as they should be, ask your hearing care professional to check the battery contacts in your hearing aids and test for battery-drain.

Rechargeable Batteries

The same type of battery that powers smartphones, tablets, and laptops is now available for certain hearing aids. With high energy density and a small footprint, lithium-ion rechargeable batteries can deliver enough power for up to 30 hours of continuous use for hearing aid users.

In the Beltone Amaze, the rechargeable battery is part of the hearing aid, so you don’t have to fumble with any small pieces.

Simply place the whole hearing aid into the charger each night, and it will be ready to go for up to 30 hours by the next morning. It can also power up quickly enough to last for eight hours after just 30 minutes of charging.
